Refurbished Server as a ZFS NAS: HBA, ECC and Drive Bays

Quick answer: a refurbished rack server can make a very good ZFS NAS, as long as you choose it for ZFS. OpenZFS's own hardware guide says ECC memory is highly recommended, hardware RAID controllers should not be used, an HBA is the better choice, and drive-managed SMR disks are not recommended. So pick a chassis with enough bays, ask what storage controller is fitted, and make sure the drives are CMR.

This page is for IT admins and small businesses in India planning a file server, backup target or media store on ZFS (the file system used by TrueNAS and available on Linux and FreeBSD). The OpenZFS guidance below comes from its "Hardware" page, last updated 6 October 2026, and the Dell figures come from Dell's owner's manuals. Both were read on 2 November 2026. For the buying side, read Serverwale's refurbished NAS buyer's guide.

Why a RAID card gets in the way

OpenZFS lists several reasons. When ZFS does the mirroring or RAID-Z itself, a checksum failure on one disk can be fixed using the copy on another disk. When a controller hides the redundancy, ZFS cannot do that. Hardware RAID may also report the wrong sector size, which can slow writes, and RAID 5 and 6 on a controller risk partial stripe writes (the RAID write hole). If the controller fails, OpenZFS says you may have to replace it with the same model or one from the same maker, whereas ZFS on its own can use any controller. And if you use the controller's write cache, it adds another failure point.

That does not make a RAID card bad. Hardware RAID is a sensible choice for a Windows file server or a database host. It is just not the controller for a ZFS pool. For that decision, see our RAID levels guide and RAID controller guide.

Which refurbished chassis has the bays?

Dell's 13th-generation owner's manuals give these drive options. They are the options Dell lists for the model, so confirm what your unit actually has.

ModelSizeDrive options listed by Dell
PowerEdge R6301UUp to ten 2.5-inch, or eight 2.5-inch, or twenty-four 1.8-inch
PowerEdge R7302UUp to eight 3.5-inch or 2.5-inch, or sixteen 2.5-inch
PowerEdge R730xd2UUp to twelve 3.5-inch plus two optional rear 2.5-inch; with four more 3.5-inch in a mid tray; or twenty-four 2.5-inch plus two rear 2.5-inch

The R730xd is the one built for storage. All three have 24 DDR4 memory slots and up to two Intel Xeon E5-2600 v3 or v4 processors, and Dell's manuals list PERC controllers (such as the H730P) and the H830 RAID card. Whether a particular PERC card can present disks directly depends on the card and its firmware, so ask the seller instead of assuming. Our R630 vs R730 vs R730xd comparison has the full specification table, and the Dell R-series chooser covers the 14th generation.

Drives, power and backup

Choose NAS or enterprise drives with a known recording type, and avoid USB enclosures. Check remaining life on any used flash drive using our SSD and NVMe life guide, and compare interfaces in SAS vs SATA vs NVMe. Put the NAS behind a UPS; see UPS sizing, and consider redundant supplies, explained in the PSU redundancy guide.

ZFS protects against disk failure and silent corruption. It does not protect against deleted files, ransomware or a stolen machine, so you still need a separate backup. Read RAID is not a backup and the on-premise backup server guide.

Checklist before you buy

Buy, rent or choose a ready NAS?

If you need storage for a project or a fixed period, NAS server rental avoids the purchase. The buy vs rent NAS guide compares the options, and SAN vs NAS and the NAS, SAN and DAS comparison help if you are unsure what type you need. For shared storage on a budget, see cheap NAS storage servers. Serverwale supplies refurbished servers and SAN and NAS storage, Dell servers on rent, and server AMC after the warranty. Browse the current stock and ask what is available.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a hardware RAID card with ZFS? OpenZFS's hardware guidance says hardware RAID controllers should not be used with ZFS. ZFS can still work on top of one, but it will not be as reliable as it would be on its own, because the controller hides the disks and limits ZFS's ability to repair a bad block from a second copy. The guide says it is best to use an HBA instead of a RAID controller, for both performance and reliability.

Is ECC memory required for a ZFS NAS? OpenZFS calls ECC memory highly recommended. Its reasoning is that no technique used in ZFS, or in any other file system, can protect against bit flips in memory. Many server-class machines carry ECC memory, which is one reason they suit this job. Confirm that the processor, board and DIMMs in the exact unit are all ECC-capable.

Can I make a RAID card behave like an HBA with single-drive RAID 0 volumes? OpenZFS says this is not recommended, for many of the same reasons as other hardware RAID types. One example it gives is that if one volume dies, the controller and operating system can renumber the other volumes, which can fault pools imported from the cache file. If your card has a true pass-through mode, ask the seller how it is set up and prefer a genuine HBA.

Are SMR hard drives safe in a ZFS pool? OpenZFS says drive-managed SMR (shingled) disks are not recommended for ZFS pools, because they can stall during resilver, scrub and send or receive jobs. It says to prefer CMR (conventional recording) drives for any redundant pool, and to verify the exact model with the manufacturer because the recording type is often not in the model number.

Which refurbished server has the most drive bays? Among Dell's 13th-generation servers, the R730xd is the storage model. Dell's manual lists up to twelve 3.5-inch front drives plus two optional 2.5-inch rear drives, and other builds with twenty-four 2.5-inch drives. The R730 takes up to eight 3.5-inch or sixteen 2.5-inch drives, and the R630 up to ten 2.5-inch drives. Always confirm the exact bay count of the unit you are buying.
