Refurbished NAS Server in India: Size It, Buy or Rent It, Back It Up

For a small office that needs shared files and a place to keep backups, a refurbished NAS is usually the cheapest sensible answer: a 2 to 4 bay unit for a team of a few people, an enterprise rack NAS such as a Dell PowerVault NX for a department, and a high-bay storage server for archives and video. Rent instead of buying when the need is temporary: a project, a migration or a short-term backup copy. Whatever you choose, a NAS is only part of a backup plan, not all of it. This guide helps you size it, decide between renting and buying a NAS server, and avoid the usual mistakes.

Three NAS classes and who they suit

ClassExamples on Serverwale's NAS pageSuits
Small business NASBuffalo or QNAP, 2 to 8 bays, SMB/NFSSmall offices, shared folders, a local backup copy
Enterprise rack NASDell PowerVault NX3200 / NX3230 / NX3340, 12 bays, Windows Storage ServerDepartments, Active Directory home folders, backup target
Storage serverSupermicro, 24 to 60+ bays, TrueNAS or CephArchives, video and CCTV retention, large backup repositories

Serverwale's NAS page shows indicative starting prices from current stock: about ₹8,790 for a 2 to 4 bay Buffalo or QNAP unit and about ₹20,694 for a Dell PowerVault NX rack NAS, excluding GST; larger storage servers are priced by configuration. Treat these as starting points and check live stock, because price depends on bays, capacity and drives. The refurbished server price index shows how refurbished compares with new.

Step 1: size the capacity honestly

  1. Add up the data you have now.
  2. Add the growth you expect over three years. Many offices see yearly growth, so do not size for today only.
  3. Subtract what RAID uses. RAID 1 mirrors, so you keep about half of raw space. RAID 5 gives up one drive, RAID 6 gives up two. The RAID levels guide explains the trade-offs.
  4. If the NAS will also hold backups, add the backup copies on top. A backup of 4 TB of data kept for several versions needs more than 4 TB.

Example, purely illustrative: 6 TB of files, expected to double in three years, needs about 12 TB usable. In RAID 6 on 6 drives of 4 TB, you keep 4 x 4 = 16 TB usable before any backup copies. That is simple arithmetic, not a quote.

Step 2: RAID is not backup

RAID keeps the NAS running when a drive fails. It does not help if someone deletes a folder, ransomware encrypts the shares, a controller fails or the office floods. Plan for the common 3-2-1 approach: three copies of your data, on two different kinds of storage, with one copy off-site. A NAS can be one of those copies, or the primary storage that gets backed up. Read RAID is not a backup and, for a bigger picture of how the pieces fit, the SAN vs NAS guide. If the NAS is also where servers keep data, see NAS vs SAN vs DAS.

Step 3: buy or rent?

SituationBetter fit
Permanent file storage that keeps growingBuy
Short project, shoot or migration with big temporary dataRent
Extra backup or DR copy for a few monthsRent
You are not sure how much capacity you will really useRent first, then buy the right size

Serverwale states that NAS rental has a minimum of one month and includes delivery and RAID and share configuration; ask for the terms in writing. Details are in the NAS, SAN and DAS rental guide, the Dell storage rental page and our own server on rent guide. For compute servers see Dell server rental.

Step 4: what to check before paying

When to step up to a PowerVault SAN

If virtual machine hosts need shared storage, a NAS is the wrong tool and an ME4 array fits better. Our PowerVault MD vs ME4 vs NX guide explains the difference, and Serverwale's PowerVault page and SAN price list show what is available.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a refurbished NAS cost in India? Serverwale's NAS page shows indicative starting prices of about ₹8,790 for a 2 to 4 bay Buffalo or QNAP unit and about ₹20,694 for a Dell PowerVault NX rack NAS, excluding GST. Final price depends on bays, capacity and drives.

Can I rent a NAS instead of buying? Yes. Serverwale states that NAS rental is available with a one-month minimum and includes delivery and configuration. Renting suits projects, migrations and temporary backup copies.

Is a NAS a backup? Not by itself. RAID protects against a failed drive, not deletion, ransomware or a site disaster. Keep at least one extra copy on different storage and one off-site.

Which RAID level should I use on a NAS? RAID 5 or RAID 6 give more usable space for file storage; RAID 6 survives two drive failures; RAID 1 or 10 suit smaller or write-heavy setups. Pick by how much capacity and protection you need.

NAS or SAN: which do I need? A NAS shares files over the network and suits file shares and backups. A SAN gives block storage to servers and suits virtual machine datastores.

Does Serverwale configure the NAS? Serverwale states that RAID and share configuration are included, with optional AMC. Confirm exactly what is included before you order.
