The drive interface on a server matters as much as the drive's raw capacity — SAS, SATA and NVMe aren't just different connectors, they're different reliability and performance classes built for different jobs.
SATA drives (HDD or SSD) are the cheapest option and fine for bulk, low-activity storage like backups or archives. They're single-ported, which means no failover path if the connection itself has an issue, and they top out around 6Gbps — the weakest link of the three for anything performance-sensitive.
SAS (Serial Attached SCSI) drives are dual-ported, run at 12Gbps, and are built for continuous enterprise duty cycles — this is what most refurbished enterprise servers ship with by default. Dual-porting means a drive can stay reachable even if one path to it fails, which matters in a RAID array under a live workload. SAS costs more than SATA per GB but is built for exactly the always-on conditions a business server runs under.
NVMe drives connect over PCIe instead of a traditional SATA/SAS controller, cutting out most of the latency overhead — this is the difference between a database or virtualization host that feels instant versus one that visibly waits on disk I/O. NVMe costs the most per GB but for a busy database, VM host, or anything IOPS-hungry, it's usually the right trade.
On a refurbished server, drive interface support is a backplane and controller feature, not something that degrades with age — a well-tested unit gives you the same SAS/NVMe capability as new. Current tested stock with drive configuration listed per unit is on our shop page.
