Server Monitoring Basics: SNMP, IPMI & What to Actually Watch (2026)

A server rarely fails without warning — a fan spins slower for weeks before it dies, a disk racks up read errors before it drops out of a RAID set, a PSU runs hotter before it trips. The only reason these become emergencies instead of scheduled maintenance is that nobody was watching. Monitoring closes that gap, and it's simpler to set up than most people expect.

SNMP vs the out-of-band management interface

SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) is the standard way monitoring tools poll hardware for status — most servers, switches and PDUs support it out of the box. Separately, a server's out-of-band management controller (iLO, iDRAC, or IPMI/Redfish on vendor-neutral hardware) exposes deeper hardware health data — fan RPM, temperature sensors, PSU status, memory ECC error counts — independent of the OS. A proper monitoring setup usually pulls from both: SNMP for general infrastructure, the OOB interface for hardware-specific health.

A common myth is that older/refurbished servers can't be properly monitored — in practice, enterprise-grade OOB controllers (iLO 4/5, iDRAC 7/8/9) have supported full SNMP and health-metric polling for well over a decade, so a well-chosen refurbished server monitors exactly as well as a new one.
