Every enterprise server has a second, tiny computer inside it that stays powered even when the main OS is off, crashed, or unreachable over the network. That's out-of-band (OOB) management — and whether you can remotely power-cycle a server, watch its boot screen, or mount a virtual install disk without physically walking to a rack depends entirely on it being present and working.
iLO (Integrated Lights-Out) is HPE's implementation, standard on ProLiant servers. iDRAC (Integrated Dell Remote Access Controller) is Dell's equivalent, standard on PowerEdge. IPMI (Intelligent Platform Management Interface) is the open standard that vendor-neutral or older/Supermicro-class servers implement directly. All three do the same core job: remote power control, remote console/KVM, hardware health monitoring, and virtual media mounting — independent of the server's own operating system.
A used refurbished server that boots fine but has a dead or unlicensed OOB module is still usable — you just lose remote management, which matters a lot once the server is racked somewhere you don't visit daily. Higher iLO/iDRAC tiers (Advanced/Enterprise) unlock features like remote virtual console and full KVM; base tiers usually give you power control and health alerts only. Check which license tier is active before assuming full remote-console access.
