Rent a GPU workstation when the need has an end date, such as a render deadline, a client project or a burst of AI training. Buy when the machine will be used most days for years. In between, work out the break-even point and check that the GPU has enough video memory for your work. This guide gives you the decision method and the checks, using what Serverwale publishes about its workstation rental and the manufacturer’s own GPU specifications. It is written for studios, engineering teams and AI groups in India.
| Your situation | Usually better | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A render deadline or project of a few months | Rent | No capital spend; return the machine when the work ends |
| A seasonal burst of AI training | Rent | Pay only for the weeks you use it |
| Steady daily work for years | Buy | Serverwale’s workstation page positions buying as best value over 2 or more years |
| Unsure how much GPU you need | Rent first | Serverwale states mid-project upgrades to GPU, RAM and storage are available on rentals |
| Work that only needs a remote desktop | Cloud workstation | See cloud workstations, which Serverwale describes as remote GPU desktops |
| Large batch renders | Render nodes | See render farm nodes for batch rendering |
Ask for two written quotes for the same configuration: a monthly rent and a purchase price. Break-even in months is roughly the purchase price divided by the monthly rent. If your project is shorter than that, renting is cheaper; if you will use the machine for longer, buying is. Then adjust for the things the simple formula ignores: what the machine could resell for, power, support or AMC cost, how soon you would need an upgrade, and the capital you would otherwise tie up. For the general rent-or-own arithmetic see server rental vs ownership in India, and for a short AI project in particular, renting vs buying a GPU server for a short AI project.
A model, scene or dataset that does not fit in GPU memory will not run properly, so size VRAM before anything else. NVIDIA lists these professional cards, all with GDDR6 and ECC memory:
| GPU | Memory (NVIDIA datasheet) | Note |
|---|---|---|
| RTX A4000 | 16 GB GDDR6 with ECC | Professional workstation card |
| RTX A5000 | 24 GB GDDR6 with ECC | Two cards linked with NVLink reach a combined 48 GB, only if the application supports NVLink |
| RTX A6000 | 48 GB GDDR6 with ECC | Two NVLinked cards give a combined 96 GB, again only where the application supports it |
Serverwale’s workstation rental page lists HP Z4, Z6 and Z8 G4 and Dell Precision 3650, 7820 and 7920 workstations, with GPU options from entry cards up to RTX A6000 class for AI, rendering, VFX and CAD. Confirm the exact GPU and VRAM of the unit you are quoted. It depends on how long you need it. Divide the purchase price by the monthly rent to get a break-even in months: if your project is shorter, renting is cheaper, and if you will use the machine for longer, buying is. Adjust for resale value, power, support and upgrade needs.
Enough to hold your model, scene or dataset. NVIDIA lists 16 GB for the RTX A4000, 24 GB for the A5000 and 48 GB for the A6000, all GDDR6 with ECC. Two cards can be linked with NVLink for a larger combined pool only if your application supports it.
Serverwale's workstation rental page states that GPU, RAM and storage upgrades are available during the project. Confirm the upgrade price and process in your written quote.
Copy out what you need, then sanitise the drives. NIST's SP 800-88 Rev. 2 describes clear, purge and destroy methods, and its FAQ says multi-pass overwriting is unnecessary for modern storage.
A cloud workstation gives you a remote GPU desktop and suits work that only needs a screen and a connection. A rented physical workstation suits work that needs the machine on your site, local data or specific peripherals.
Serverwale's dedicated workstation rental page is for Bangalore. It also offers server rental in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Hyderabad and states pan-India delivery for its products. Ask for availability in your city.
