To sell or exchange an old server in India, do four things in this order: identify the machine exactly (brand, model, serial number and configuration), grade its condition honestly, sanitise every drive and reset the management settings, and then choose between a cash sale and an exchange against new hardware. This checklist covers each step, what usually decides the value, and how Serverwale’s exchange of an old server works. For the wider decommissioning picture, read our server decommissioning and data wiping guide.
Buyers value a server by brand, model, generation and what is inside it, so write down the exact model, the CPU, RAM, drives, RAID card and power supplies, and read the serial number from the label and the management controller. A serial lookup also tells the buyer the machine’s age; see how to check server warranty by serial number for Dell, HPE, Lenovo, IBM, Cisco and Supermicro.
Serverwale’s exchange page states that the brand and working condition of the old server decide the discount, and lists four bands. These are discounts on a new ProStation Systems server or workstation, and the final figure is confirmed after physical inspection:
| Condition | What it means (per Serverwale) | Exchange discount |
|---|---|---|
| Excellent | Fully functional, with all components (CPU, RAM, PSU, drives), no physical damage | Up to 20% |
| Good | Working, minor wear, all core components present | Up to 15% |
| Fair | Functional but some components missing, or minor hardware faults | Up to 10% |
| Older / worn | Heavily used but still a branded, powering-on enterprise server | Up to 5%, case by case |
Missing drives, RAM or power supplies lower the value, so keep the original parts together and say clearly what is absent. Serverwale accepts branded enterprise servers such as Dell PowerEdge, HP and HPE ProLiant, IBM and Lenovo System x and ThinkSystem, Cisco UCS and Supermicro, as well as blade chassis, tower workstations, and storage and network equipment.
NIST SP 800-88 Rev. 2, Guidelines for Media Sanitization (final in September 2025; its FAQ was published 16 July 2026), describes three methods: clear, purge and destroy. Practical points from NIST’s FAQ:
Also reset the management controller (iDRAC, iLO, XClarity or IPMI) and BIOS passwords, clear RAID configurations as needed, and remove any SD or USB boot media. Ask any buyer for their wipe method and a written confirmation. Serverwale’s exchange page states that it provides a certified data wipe; confirm what the certificate covers before you rely on it.
| Route | Suits you if | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Sell to a dealer | You want money and no new purchase | Get the valuation in writing, with serials listed |
| Exchange against a new server | You are already upgrading | Serverwale applies the exchange value only towards a new ProStation Systems build, not a refurbished unit |
| Keep it as a spare or lab machine | It still has a useful role | Support and parts get harder as the model ages |
If you want refurbished hardware rather than a new build, buy it separately from refurbished servers in India; our guide to refurbished vs used vs open-box servers explains the differences. For new custom hardware, see ProStation Systems.

Identify the exact model and serial number, grade the condition honestly, sanitise all drives and reset the management settings, then get a written valuation from a dealer or choose an exchange against new hardware. Keep the original CPU, RAM, power supplies and drives together, because missing parts lower the value.
Brand, model and generation, whether it powers on and works, whether all components are present, and physical condition. Serverwale's exchange page states that the brand and condition decide the discount, from up to 20% for excellent condition down to up to 5% for older, worn servers.
Follow NIST SP 800-88 Rev. 2: sanitise the whole storage device using clear, purge or destroy as the data sensitivity and destination require, and verify the result. NIST says multi-pass overwriting is unnecessary for modern storage; clear is typically one overwrite pass or a manufacturer factory reset.
No. Serverwale's exchange value is applied only towards a new ProStation Systems server or workstation. Refurbished servers are sold separately.
Branded enterprise servers: Dell PowerEdge, PowerVault and Precision, HP and HPE ProLiant and Apollo, IBM and Lenovo System x and ThinkSystem, Cisco UCS, Catalyst and Nexus, Supermicro, and NetApp and EMC storage. Blade chassis, tower workstations, NAS, SAN and network equipment are also listed.
No. The percentages are the maximum for each condition band and are confirmed after physical inspection, subject to availability of the model you want.
