HP ProLiant Gen9 vs Gen10: Which Refurbished Generation to Buy

ProLiant Gen9 and Gen10 are the two most common refurbished HP server generations in the Indian market today. The short answer: Gen9 (Xeon E5 v3/v4, DDR4-2133/2400) is the value pick for general workloads and virtualization on a tight budget; Gen10 (Xeon Scalable, DDR4-2666/2933, iLO 5) is the better pick if you need faster memory bandwidth, more PCIe lanes, or firmware/security updates HPE still actively ships.

The core platform difference

Gen9 servers (DL380 Gen9, DL360 Gen9, ML350 Gen9) run Intel Xeon E5-2600 v3 or v4 processors with DDR4 memory topping out around 2400MT/s. Gen10 (DL380 Gen10, DL360 Gen10) moved to Intel Xeon Scalable (Skylake/Cascade Lake), DDR4 up to 2933MT/s, and roughly double the PCIe lanes per socket — which matters if you're adding multiple NVMe drives or 25/40GbE network cards down the line.

iLO version — the practical day-to-day difference

Gen9 ships with iLO 4; Gen10 ships with iLO 5, which added a hardware root-of-trust security model and generally sees longer firmware support from HPE. If remote out-of-band management is central to how you operate the server (see our iLO vs iDRAC vs IPMI guide), iLO 5 is the more current platform to standardize on.

Which one should you actually buy

Use caseBetter fit
Budget virtualization host, file/print/AD serverGen9
Database or ERP host needing more memory bandwidthGen10
NVMe storage or 25GbE+ networking add-ons plannedGen10 (more PCIe lanes)
Lab, dev/test, or a secondary DR nodeGen9

Both generations are still fully serviceable and spare-parts-available in India — the decision usually comes down to workload memory/PCIe needs rather than one generation being obsolete. All ProLiant units in our tested refurbished inventory list the exact generation, CPU, RAM and iLO tier upfront, and every sale is backed by our 3-year warranty and AMC program.
