Rack Unit (U) Sizing: How Much Rack Space Does Your Server Need

A rack unit (U or RU) is a standard 1.75 inches (44.45mm) of vertical rack height. A "1U server" is one rack unit tall, a "2U server" is two, and so on — the number tells you how much of your rack the server will physically occupy, which is the first thing to plan before buying, not after.

Common server heights and what they trade off

Form factor	Typical use
1U	Density-focused compute — web/app tiers, edge nodes. Limited internal drive bays and PCIe slots due to height.
2U	The most common general-purpose enterprise server height — good balance of drive bays (often 8-24), PCIe slots and cooling headroom. Most Dell PowerEdge and ProLiant DL380-class servers ship 2U.
4U	Storage-dense or GPU-heavy builds — more drive bays, more PCIe slots for GPUs or HBAs, better airflow per component at the cost of rack space.

What to check besides just "how many U"

Rack depth — enterprise 2U/4U servers commonly run 700-800mm deep; confirm your rack/cabinet depth before ordering, not after it arrives.
PDU and power capacity — total the rated wattage of every device you're racking against your PDU/circuit capacity, with headroom for dual-PSU redundancy.
Airflow direction — data-center racks are almost always front-to-back (cold aisle in front); confirm any server you buy matches that airflow direction, especially with used/refurbished units that may have been reconfigured.
Cable management and rail kits — sliding rail kits matter more as U-height and weight go up; a 4U fully-loaded storage server is not something you want on fixed rails if you'll ever need to service it in place.
